{"id":3878,"date":"2014-04-29T15:33:23","date_gmt":"2014-04-29T19:33:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dupontcircleanc.net\/wordpress\/?p=3878"},"modified":"2017-05-11T14:28:05","modified_gmt":"2017-05-11T18:28:05","slug":"blog-notes-on-april-2014-pedestrian-advisory-council-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dupontcircleanc.net\/wordpress\/2014\/04\/29\/blog-notes-on-april-2014-pedestrian-advisory-council-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"BLOG: Notes on April 2014 Pedestrian Advisory Council Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[<em>Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.willstephensanc.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.willstephensanc.com<\/a><\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a title=\"Pedestrian Advisory Council DC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.walkdcwalk.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pedestrian Advisory Council<\/a>\u00a0(PAC) met in April 2014 for committee-level discussions. \u00a0(The PAC trades off every other month between\u00a0full PAC meetings and committee meetings. \u00a0For a report on my first full PAC meeting as Ward 2 representative in March 2014, find a prior blog post\u00a0<a title=\"March 2014 Notes on PAC meeting\" href=\"http:\/\/willstephensanc.com\/2014\/03\/26\/notes-on-first-pedestrian-advisory-council-meeting-march-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>This was my first committee meeting, and I joined the &#8220;Walking Environment Committee.&#8221; \u00a0Our special guest was Earl Eutsler (earl.eutsler@dc.gov) from DDOT&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"Urban Forestry Administration\" href=\"http:\/\/ddot.dc.gov\/page\/ddot-urban-forestry-administration-ufa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Urban Forestry Administration (UFA)<\/a>, to talk about the interplay between the walking environment, the tree canopy in DC, and UFA&#8217;s management of street and island trees.<\/p>\n<p>The most useful and interesting discussion points were as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Getting Repairs Done<\/strong>: \u00a0Earl advised that using the\u00a0<a title=\"DCD's 311 system\" href=\"http:\/\/311.dc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3-1-1 system<\/a>\u00a0is the best way to get repairs into the queue for action by UFA. \u00a0Other DDOT staff confirmed that UFA in particular makes good use of the 3-1-1 system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tree canopy:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0UFA manages about 10% of the total DC tree canopy, with National Parks, other Federal agencies,\u00a0the Department of Parks &amp; Recreation, and private space accounting for the remainder. \u00a0The District has a goal to reach 40% tree canopy coverage within the next 10-15 years. \u00a0Earl noted that all pavement, including sidewalks and streets, last longer with greater tree canopy coverage, because of the shade provided.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Flexi-pave<\/strong>: DDOT is now using a special porous material for paving around street trees called Flexi-pave. \u00a0This is meant to replace and improve upon the &#8220;rubber sidewalk&#8221; squares that they previously installed in places like 17th Street, which buckles after only a couple of years. \u00a0If there are places with rubber sidewalk buckling, residents should note this in the 3-1-1 system as a &#8220;tree inspection request,&#8221; and these areas will be prioritized for Flexi-pave installation (if they are not already in the system).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mapping<\/strong>: \u00a0UFA has comprehensive, interactive maps of street trees, including planned replacement and planting spots, on the agency\u00a0<a title=\"UFA Interactive Street Tree Map\" href=\"http:\/\/dcgis.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/PublicGallery\/index.html?appid=7fa4666b530d44238de03b033d6a9444&amp;group=1ca7c038cf8d4cdba5d595b8f7508194\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>UFA Representatives<\/strong>: The UFA representatives for our area are &#8220;Team 2&#8221; and include Carlson Klapthor (carlson.klapthor@dc.gov, mostly north of the Circle) and Simoun Banua (simoun.banue@dc.gov, mostly south of the Circle).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Cross-posted at www.willstephensanc.com] The\u00a0Pedestrian Advisory Council\u00a0(PAC) met in April 2014 for committee-level discussions. \u00a0(The PAC trades off every other month between\u00a0full PAC meetings and committee meetings. \u00a0For a report on my first full PAC meeting as Ward 2 representative in March 2014, find a prior blog post\u00a0here.)
